  Dead links are external links or internal links that lead to a website, page, or file that no longer exists. In these situations, the server typically issues a server response code of 404 or 410. Detecting broken pages on large websites is difficult. Especially when there are thousands of pages. Because administrators cannot use  the backway to recognize errors that occur to users.  Google’s search robots detect errors by clicking on dead links . As they monitor database resources and analyze content. When the robot receives code 410, it knows that the page doesn’t exist and  no analysis is needed.

Error 404 can also appear when the server returns a  response code of 200 (everything is fine, the page exists). But it is actually empty or missing. This response is called a 404 soft error. This occurs when a non-existent page does not return a 404 code or  URL redirect to a related page.

 This results in pages being indexed that don’t exist, and your website loses crawl budget. This is a specific time limit for search engines to scan  web resources. Additionally crawling the wrong or non-existent pages. The first time will reduce your site’s visibility  and reduce your visitor numbers

 2 Find pages indexed by search engines. 

To do this. Enter the command “site:” and your domain in the search bar. Open all the returned pages  and check if there are any dead links on your site. This method, like the previous method, becomes difficult when resources are large.

 3 You can use the functions of  Google Search Console.

 First, you need to authenticate your website.

 Then go to the Scan > Scan Errors section on the toolbar. 

The list that appears will show all pages that contain errors. 

4 Bing Webmaster Tools has similar functionality.

 After authentication, go to the toolbar and select the appropriate section. This tool checks for break links and displays their numbers and addresses. 

Google Search Console and other tools only show break links. And error pages  in your database. 

However, the results will be inaccurate and not the same. This is because search engines’ databases  are updated at different intervals. And their crawl depths do not match. 

Therefore, it makes sense to use both resources at the same time.

 To check your site for all errors and break links. You need to open the list of projects in Serpstat and click Add new project.
